Weekend nightlife wrap-up
by Jahna Peloquin on Jan.02, 2010, under Style & Nightlife
New Year’s Eve may be over, but the weekend still holds a few reasons worth leaving the house in zero-degree weather for in St. Paul.

Jake Rudh
Jake Rudh gives St. Paul guilty pleasure
Tonight, Jake Rudh of Transmission fame makes a rare St. Paul appearance – and a rare Saturday night gig – tonight at O’Gara’s. If you dig the Transmission “Guilty Pleasures” night, the set list should be right up your alley – expect early ’90s booty-shakin’ hits from the likes of Salt N Pepa and Bel Biv Davoe. (10 p.m.-2 a.m. Sat. Free. 21-plus. 164 Snelling Ave. N., St. Paul. 651-644-3333.) It’s the official after party for the Minnesota RollerGirls‘ home season kick-off game at Roy Wilkens Auditorium. The game itself begins at 7:30 p.m., and costs 13 bones for entry.

DJ Frayz
DJ Frayz’s Billboard Top Hits Night
Also tonight, DJ Frayz is having a Billboard Top Hits Night at Lowertown GLBT club Rumours & Innuendo, featuring your favorite tunes from the ’80s, ’90s and today, mixed with Frayz’ hot beats. Drink specials include $2 rails and $2 bottled beers from 9-10 p.m. (9 p.m.-3 a.m. Sat. 213 E. 4th St., St. Paul. 651-225-4528.)

Grant Cutler
Grant Cutler & The Gorgeous Lords, Strangelights and Satellite Voices
I’ll be heading to Turf Club for an under-the-radar show that will feature Grant Cutler & The Gorgeous Lords, Strangelights and Satellite Voices. It will be the debut show for Satellite Voices, the latest solo project from Knol Tate (of Askeleton, Killsadie and The Hidden Chord fame), and the second show by Grant Cutler’s latest endeavor, whose better-known band Lookbook has topped the best-of lists for their 2009 album Wild at Heart. With his solo material and backed by his band the Gorgeous Lords (rounded out by members of Askeleton, Brutal Becomings and The Plastic Constellations), Cutler takes a decidedly more serious route with thoughtful songs that recall a spaced-out Leonard Cohen. (9 p.m. $5. 21-plus. 1601 University Ave. W., St. Paul. 651-647-0486.)

Mayor’s Inauguration show stars the Honeydogs, Jeremy Messersmith and friends
On Monday, head to the Union Depot in Lowertown for the Mayor’s Inauguration for an all-star local music lineup that includes the Honeydogs, Jeremy Messersmith, John Munson (The New Standards, Semisonic), Chris Osgood and Dave Ahl (Warblers and Suicide Commandos), Desdamona and Carnage (Ill Chemistry), Molly Maher, Holly Munoz (Aviette), and Martin Devaney. The ceremony kicks off with an inaugural poem by St. Paul’s Poet Laureate, Carol Connolly, music from the Walker West Music Academy and St. Paul Chamber Orchestra, and a speech from Mayor Coleman himself. (4:30-8:30 p.m. Music begins at 5:30 p.m. Free. All ages. Union Depot, 214 E. 4th St., St. Paul.)
Strib gives St. Paul nightlife props
We also can’t help but brag a little. The Minneapolis Star Tribune and Vita.mn give St. Paul nightlife some love in their year-end nightlife wrap-up. One of their requests last year? “Show St. Paul some love. Did they listen? Yes! After the Bulldog in 2008, Barrio’s opening this summer solidified Lowertown’s status as a nightlife hotbed. And there’s more to come: Cities 97 radio personality Brian (B.T.) Turner is still planning his downtown music venue, and Bin Wine Bar will open soon.” Thanks to Tom Horgen for patting our backs!
